NEW Queer/Sexuality Minor Beginning Fall 2024

This exciting interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary minor offers students critical tools for understanding sexuality as an identity, behavior, or practice, and axis of inequality and power; the curriculum especially emphasizes understanding LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, and "queer" as a theoretical lens and tool. The minor is designed to be flexible and easy to combine with a variety of majors, minors, and/or microcredentials, especially in humanities and social sciences. Students who might be interested in combining the queer studies minor with another WGST program-the WGST major or minor- should consult with the WGST program coordinator early in their time at �鶹��ý�Ŷ� in order to evaluate whether such a combination will be possible in their particular case. The minor involves two required courses and a combination of electives from the two lists below. Students should consult with the WGST coordinator when choosing courses. They may also receive permission to waive in some courses not offered on the list below such as experimental or new courses on relevant topics.

Research Interests

Dr. Medeiros is an engaged, critical medical anthropologist and feminist anthropologist whose research explores health inequities facing women of African descent in the Americas and im/migrant communities in the United States

Dr. Medeiros’ book Marriage, Divorce and Distress in Northeast Brazil: Black Women's Perspectives on Love, Respect and Kinship explores intimate relationships in rural Northeast Brazil to examine how inequality at the intersection of race, gender and class affects relationships and health and well-being in structurally vulnerable communities of African descent.

Melanie Blood has served in the Provost's Office as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs since August 2019, first in an interim role and since January 2022 as the successful candidate of a national search. She has been involved in a number of projects that have enhanced our curriculum and advanced assessment across the college. As Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Melanie recently led the college through a successful review for reaccreditation.

Melanie became a member of the �鶹��ý�Ŷ� faculty in 1995, advancing to the rank of associate professor in 1998, and to professor in 2007. She received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011. In her faculty role, she has taught courses in dramatic literature and film, and musical theatre, as well as courses in the Women and Gender Studies program, also serving as its director for more than a decade. Melanie previously served the college as coordinator of fellowships and scholarships for five years, and as assistant/associate director/dean of the School of Arts for twelve years. Her research centers on American theatre and drama, and she regularly directs musicals and plays.

Alice Rutkowski received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and became a member of the �鶹��ý�Ŷ� faculty in 2003. She often teaches the courses Literature and the Civil War, the Queer Nineteenth Century, Safe Zone Train-the-Trainer, Feminism and Pornography, and Major Authors: Melville, among others. Her research centers on the Civil War and Reconstruction as well as queer theory and trans politics. She received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012 and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service in 2022. Recent articles include the articles "Bad Sex Ed" and "Trans Feeling in the Nineteenth Century." She has also published in Radical Teacher, the volume Mothers and Sons: Centering Mother Knowledge, Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers and Studies in the Literary Imagination.

Rutkowski has been Chair of the Department of English since 2021, and is the chair of the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society selection committee. In 2013, she founded the LGBTQ Issues Working Group. Dr. Catherine Adams has been a member of the �鶹��ý�Ŷ� faculty since 2007. Professor Adams is an expert in the history of African-Americans in the early United States. Her research interests include early American history, African American history, women's history, and material culture. In 2010, Dr. Adams co-authored Love of Freedom: Black Women in Colonial and Revolutionary New England.
