I would recommend majoring in English to anyone who wants a well rounded education. My �鶹��ý�Ŷ� education allowed me to focus on the areas that interested me and taught me how to learn, rather than just what to learn. I have the ability to plan, coordinate, network, and communicate because I was an English major. The intimate classes led by inspirational professors encouraged me to participate, even when I wasn't the smartest person in the room. This has carried over into my career and people are happy to know I am going to try my best and learn as I go. Being able to fully absorb instructions (and ask questions when I don't understand!) are invaluable to my career.

I majored in English at �鶹��ý�Ŷ� because I loved literature and language as a way of connecting people and transcending barriers. I considered other majors (those traditionally considered to lead to more lucrative career paths), but my passion and interest--as well as the brilliance and talent of the English department professors--made it impossible for me to declare, and commit to, another major. I have never been happier to have made that choice.

Almost immediately after graduating, I was offered a position at Thomson Reuters (formerly known as West Group) as an Editor. I was so excited to be in the world of publishing and knew that I definitely did not want to teach (as most people assume you will do with a B.A. in English). I was promoted to Senior Editor and began to develop skills and interests beyond editing manuscripts. I am currently a Senior Publishing Coordinator, which means that I oversee the processing of manuscripts from author submission to publishing for print and online media. I have had the opportunity to train international colleagues, implement new teams and help to develop their skills and experience, as well as participate in diversity initiatives to further a culture of equality that this organization has embraced.

The knowledge that I have learned as an English major at �鶹��ý�Ŷ� has also helped me to be hired at various marketing agencies. I have worked for clients such as the Harlem Globetrotters, Corona, Chevy, and Nickelodeon.

The career paths available to you as an English major are limitless. I wish you the best of luck!

I started at �鶹��ý�Ŷ� knowing I wanted to study English literature, but with little direction as to what sort of career path I wanted to pursue. Through classes as well as taking advantage of other opportunities – several internships, tutoring at the Writing Learning Center, and editing for The Lamron – I gained skills and confidence as an editor and decided to pursue editing professionally.

After applying for entry-level publishing jobs for several months with no luck, I applied for a part-time job at a children’s bookstore on a whim, which brought me to Boston.

I’m working now as an Editorial Assistant in the Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty for a medical publishing company in the Boston area, where I’m editing clinical material that helps doctors make decisions about patient care. My job involves communicating regularly with external contributors, editing topics for style/grammar/clarity, and working with authors and editors to develop and publish new and updated content.

At �鶹��ý�Ŷ�, I benefited from the small class sizes and the fact that most literature classes were discussion-based; every class was an opportunity to learn from knowledgeable and animated professors and the super-smart students I took classes with. These discussions taught us introverted bookish types to articulate our thoughts clearly and effectively, which is a crucial skill in any career path. The diversity of class options and exposure to new genres kept me constantly engaged, which has pushed me to find a career that excites and challenges me in the same way.

I’m still very new to the professional world, but the biggest things I've learned so far are to keep an open mind and be persistent. Try not to get too stuck on a specific career path or five-year plan. You never know what a certain class, job, or experience will be like until you’re in it — what you end up enjoying may surprise you. At the same time, be persistent in looking for work that really fulfills you.
